New Zealand and American researchers pooled the results of 11 clinical trials, in which 12 thousand people over 40 were randomly assigned to take either a placebo or at least 500 milligrams of calcium a day for an average of almost 4 years.
The rate of heart attacks was small. About 2.7 percent of the participants taking calcium went into cardiac arrest, compared with 2.2 percent of those taking a placebo.
Yet, because so many people take calcium supplements, researchers worry it could represent a large number of additional heart attacks.
Bone loss and fractures are a major health concern for older people. Meanwhile,
calcium supplements have become increasingly popular since studies have shown they help to build bone density and reduce fractures.
