Tips for detecting head lice

They are very tiny, but they can cause enormous panic in parents.

If you have a child, head lice is unfortunately a potential threat.

Head lice are tiny insects that are hard to detect, yet they're easily spread.

The little critters cause intense itching and small red bumps on the scalp and neck. Their eggs or "nits" look kind of like dandruff.

Head lice are not caused by poor hygiene; they don't discriminate.

They can live up to 30 days on your scalp and can be passed along by sharing brushes, clothing or bedding.

Unlike body lice, head lice don't carry diseases and they're not life-threatening.

In the past, most schools had a "no-nit policy" for allowing kids in the classroom after a diagnosis. But experts now discourage that practice, saying they're no proof that keeping kids out keeps infestations down.

How do you know if your child has head lice?

Use gloves and a bright light. Check their hair in small sections, especially around the neck and ears.

If you find nits or live lice, stay calm.

There are many over the counter products that can safely rid your child of the buggers.

Talk to your pediatrician for the best options.

•No Sharing Personal Items (Brushes, Hats and Pillows) •Avoid head to head contact. (Even a hug can spread head lice) •Keep hair up in a ponytail or braid. •Use a lice preventative product. Order Product Here: •Screen your child for lice or nits. (Look on the hair, at the nape of the neck, behind the ears, the crown and the hairline at the front of the face.) •Use a lice comb regularly. (Regular combing with a lice comb can provide early detection and prevent infestations. If lice or nits (eggs) are found early enough, you may be able to stop the infestation from spreading to other family members.)
