SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Scott County Health Department tells WKYT the whooping cough cases in their county is improving.

The number of whooping cough cases are now up to thirteen. We're told eight have the sickness at Ann Mason Elementary School, two at Scott County High School, and one at Western Elm Elementary School, Lemons Mill Elementary School and Stamping Ground Elementary School.

The health department says doctors have treated for allergies instead of whooping cough. They're encouraging parents insist on the whooping cough test if their child shows symptoms. Also, a child can still get whooping cough if they're vaccinated for it.

In Fayette County, we're told one was confirmed last week, and one this week. The cases are an infant and an elderly person.

As we reported Tuesday, parents of students at a Scott County elementary school received letters Tuesday, alerting them to some recent cases of whooping cough.

State health officials say five cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in students who attend Anne Mason Elementary School.

Health leaders say symptoms of whooping cough include cold-like symptoms and frequent coughing. They also say some people with whooping cough may not have a fever.

Health leaders say students with the illness should stay home until five days of antibiotics have been completed.

They say the illness is spread when an infected person sneezes or coughs, and then another person breathes in the bacteria.
