Health leaders warn Christmastime may increase flu season

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - 'Tis the season for spending time with family and friends. However, health leaders want you to stay healthy during holiday gatherings.

The Fayette County Health Department has confirmed three cases of the flu so far this season in Lexington. That's down from this time last year. However, health leaders say they normally see an increase in flu cases around Christmastime because many people attend parties and family gatherings where germs are easily spread. They say to try not to get to close to others.

"If people are sick and they're sharing food with one another, they're in close quarters, you know, you do have the tendency to share food with others, so definitely try to stay off in an enclosed area if people are coming to your house," Greg Hiler, with the Fayette County Health Department, tells us.

Health leaders say to prevent the spread of flu, wash your hands frequently and get a flu shot if you haven't had one yet this season.
