The future of grocery shopping looks quicker and easier than ever before. Kroger is testing the Scan-Bag-Go scanner in two Northern Kentucky stores, Cold Springs and Loveland.

Shoppers pick up a scanner at the front of the store. While shopping, customers scan item bar codes. The scanner keeps track of number of items, keeps a running total, and even scans store cards to track discounts. Coupons are scanned in special "Scan Bag Go" checkout lanes. Since items are bagged while shopping, some customers say checkout time is cut down by 90 percent.

Shopper Amy Hall says, "It's because you don't have to put the groceries on the belt.. It's nice when you have kids because when you're done shopping they are really done. At checkout you just give them your scanner, use your coupons and leave."

Kroger is also testing a technology called Advantage Checkout at the Hebron location. Advantage checkout is a tunnel where barcodes are quickly scanned as items run through the tube.

Kroger is gauging customer feedback on both Scan-Bag-Go and Advantage Checkout before installing the technologies in other stores.
