Bluegrass Prevention Center works with 17 counties in the surrounding region. Prevention is policy focused, research based, community centered and is guided by current data. The Prevention Center works with communities to determine and focus on current challenges. On big focus we have addressed in the recent years is prescription drug abuse. I am going to give you some tips on safety with your medications.
It isn’t always easy to be aware of everyone around you. Following are a few tips to increase your safety as well as safety for medications.
Handling medication wisely at every step is best practice.
Bluegrass Prevention Center has distributed over 15,000 copies of the Prescription Drug Booklet for parents and grandparent. Some are still available and can be obtained for free by contacting us at 859-225-3296.
The biannual Med-Toss will be September 29, 2012. This medicine take-back program for disposal is a good way to remove expired, unwanted, or unused medicines from the home and reduce the chance that others may accidentally take the medication.
Bluegrass Prevention Center is proud to offer a new suicide prevention curriculum- Q.P.R. (Question, Persuade, Refer). The goal of this program is to teach participants to recognize someone at risk for suicide, increase knowledge of intervention skills and to explain referral resources and how to refer someone to get help. Q.P.R. trainings are easily accessible, practical and evidenced based. This training is one hour long and can be provided in your facility. Upon completion of this course each participant will receive a certificate of completion.

Bluegrass Prevention also offers training on topics regarding alcohol, synthetic drugs, marijuana, and most other drugs. An interesting fact that is often missed: as a person ages, the body metabolizes alcohol at slower rates, meaning it is easier to become addicted. Learn more by scheduling training! We stay up to date with new trends and information to pass on to others.
Bluegrass Prevention Center has a lending library with many resources: DVD’s, videos, and brochures that can be checked out or provided free. We work with the following counties: Anderson, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Estill, Fayette, Franklin, Garrard, Harrison, Jessamine, Lincoln, Madison, Mercer, Nicholas, Powell, Scott and Woodford. Each county has an Agency for Substance Abuse Policy Board that is comprised of volunteers. The mission of ASAP Boards is to develop a long-term strategy to reduce the incidence of youth and adult smoking and tobacco addictions, promote resistance to smoking, reduce incidence of substance abuse, and promote effective treatment of substance abuse throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Please contact Bluegrass Prevention Center if you are interested in getting involved. Bluegrass Prevention Center has also been aware of the substantial amount of grandparent’s raising grandkids and there is a website to go to if the child was exposed to alcohol during pregnancy.
