Proud To Be Mountain News

Find out a very proud moment for our station from the UK-UofL game.

This year's Governor's Cup was very enjoyable once again.  I have been to 2 of them in my time here.  Both at Louisville ironically enough.  It was great to see the Cats bring home the Cup for the fourth straight year.  A couple of big plays highlighted an entertaining game.  And I almost got hit on the sidelines twice (thank you to the many, many people who texted me from around the  country saying "I just saw you on TV").

But nothing beats one simple moment that occurred after the game.  I requested to speak to Brad Durham.  He is an Offensive Lineman for UK.  To know his story is a wonderful one.  As a High School student at Rockcastle County Louisville offered him a scholarship (The Cards were a Top 10 team at the time).  He accepted and was excited to be a Cardinal.  But Louisville would later pull his scholarship and give it to someone else.  As fate would have it he ended up at UK and now finishes his career a perfect 4-0 against the Cardinals.

As I patiently waited on the field after the game I heard a big booming voice say "Mountain News!".  It was Brad coming down the walkway headed in our direction.  He met us with a big smile that outgrew his 6-4, 321 pound frame, and a hearty handshake that could have crushed rocks.  After politely destroying my hand in his vice like grip he said "I heard that someone wanted to talk to me and I knew it had to be Mountain News."  That is better than almost any compliment than you can imagine.  A player knowing that we are there to talk to him because he is one of our guys is something so special that words fail to describe.  To know that we did our job so thoroughly well that he understands that we are there for him is some serious validation.

He is our player. OUR player!

And I couldn't be prouder of our station at moments like that.  And I couldn't be any prouder of how Brad has handled himself at UK.  That is why WYMT exists.  To bring a voice to those that might otherwise go unheard.  That is our job.  And for at least one day, for one moment, I know that we had accomplished that.

As always support your local teams.
