The day has finally arrived!!! Absolutely no more waiting as the football season officially kicks off today. No more teasing football enthusiast with NFL pre-season games and high school scrimmages. The college football season starts later tonight!!!

The day has finally arrived!!! Absolutely no more waiting as the football season officially kicks off today. No more teasing football enthusiast with NFL pre-season games and high school scrimmages. The college football season starts later tonight!!!

As I sit here at my computer watching College Football Live on ESPN, i find myself thinking about some of the games tonight. So I will take some time to express some of my thoughts on those games.

Vanderbilt vs. Miami of Ohio

There is one player that I have special interest in, considering that I have seen him play in person last year during my first high school football season here in Eastern Kentucky. John Cole (who represents, one of what I like to call WYMT's left coast teams in, Somerset High School) was possibly the best wide receiver to come through Eastern Kentucky and maybe even the state. I had the pleasure of not only seeing this young man on the field in person, but also had the pleasure of speaking with him as well.

For those of you who do not know Cole; last season, Cole broke the record for most touchdowns caught by a receiver in his career in the state of Kentucky breaking the record set by Montrell Jones of Male. Now, Cole has moved on to the college ranks and has been opening some eyes at Vanderbilt. Word down in Vandy is that Cole could receive substantial playing time as a freshman and I am curious to see just how much game action Cole will receive. I am sure that Cole fans, especially over in the Pulaski County / Somerset will all be keeping their eye on him.

That games kicks off @ 7:30pm

Eastern Kentucky vs. Cincinnati

Last season the EKU Colonels went on the road to Commonwealth Stadium where they took on the Cats. They lost 50-10, however that was the game where former Perry Central quarterback Al Holland made him debut. It was coming off the bench for, at the time, starter Josh Greco, but that lasted exactly two EKU drives. Who knew that a year later "Allan Wayne" would be going into the 2008 season the reigning OVC offensive player of the year. As the saying goes, what a difference a year makes!!!

Tonight Holland will try to lead his team to a victory over the Bearcats of Cincinnati.

That game is also set for 7:30pm.

N.C. State vs. South Carolina

Ok. So obviously this is SEC country, but I have to go back in time to a few weeks ago when I came across a story about just exactly who the real USC is. I will end the debate right here. USC, the University of Southern California is the real USC. If you are looking for numbers to back it up, its simple, Southern Cal 11 to South Carolina 0 ... Southern Cal has 11 national championships and South Carolina has 0. Zero as in no national championship and no SEC championships. However, the Gamecocks did win the ACC Championship back in 1969.

Anyways, back to the game. All I can say about this game is the "Ol' Ball Coach". That's really all you need to know, and to drop some knowledge on you, Steve Spurrier's record on opening day is 17 - 1. His only loss was way back in 1989 while coaching for Duke. He lost 27-21 ironically enough to South Carolina. The numbers say it all.

I'd look for South Carolina to give the SEC a good start on the year and start off 1-0 versus no conference teams.

That game kicks off at 8pm.
