These Games Matter

The District playoff picture will either clear up or become more muddied after this weekend. Plus, we have a list of the games that we are going to be at on Friday.

There is a lot to be won and lost this weekend as most teams return to District play.

#7 Letcher Central vs. #10 Whitley County

This game will either clarify the playoff picture in Class 5A, District 8 or make it one giant jigsaw puzzle.  If Whitley County wins they will improve to 3-0 with only Clay County left on their schedule.  If Letcher Central wins then things get very, very interesting.  That would leave the Cougars, the Colonels and Perry Central all with 1 loss... to each other.  Keep your eye on Jason Powers (94 Carries, 741 Yards, 12 Touchdowns) for Whitley County and Charlie Banks (13 Rushing TDs, 9 Passing TDs) for Letcher Central.

Clay County vs. Perry County Central

The other game in the Class 5A, District 8 Playoff picture has a sense of history in it.  Zach Lewis of Clay County enters only 69 yards away from breaking Tim Couch's career passing yardage mark.  He should surpass that in the first half if not in the first quarter... or even the first drive.  Perry Central gets quarterback Jordan Amis back after missing last weeks game with a bad knee.  The Picasso of the Mountains is a pure play maker.  This game means more to Perry Central.  The Colonels are hoping to host their second home playoff game in school history.  (Last year was their first).  After their loss to Whitley County last week, they are going to have to take care of business and hope for some help.

Lincoln County vs. South Laurel

South Laurel enters with their playoff lives on the line.  The Cardinals enter at 0-2 in District play after a tough 61-60 overtime loss to Pulaski County two weeks ago.  A bye week should help South Laurel come up with a game plan for the Patriots.  A loss in this game would put South Laurel at 0-3 with only District leading Mercer County left on their schedule.  We know that Ricky Bowling (22 Passing TDs) will put up big numbers, but the defense will have to show up at some point this season.

Southwestern vs. Pulaski County

Class 5A has a lot of big games this week.  This is another one.  The Reservation should be rocking as Pulaski County makes the cross-town trip to Southwestern.  The Warriors have a lot to play for.  A win on Friday would give Southwestern a final District record of 3-1 and a first round home playoff game.  Pulaski County could use the win to assure themselves of a playoff appearance.  Jake King (88 Carries, 673 Yards, 10 TDs) of Southwestern and Chris Muse (13 Total TDs) of Pulaski County should spear head both offenses.

Middlesboro vs. #5 Corbin

This is the de facto Class 2A, District 8 Championship game.  The winner of this game will most likely be crowned District Champion.  The two schools have always had a healthy rivalry, even when they weren't District rivals.  Corbin has owned the series as of late, winning 4 of the last 5, including both games last season.  Caleb Watkins had a huge game last week (20 Carries, 294 Yards, 4 TDs) against Lexington Christian while filling in for an injured Caleb Watkins.  On the other side of the field is Mr. Sports Overtime, Hunter Adams.  Adams might be the best all-around player in the Mountains.  Last week alone he ran for two touchdowns, had an interception and then returned a kick-off 85 yards for a touchdown with 35 seconds left that proved to be the game winner in a 28-21 victory over Clay County.

Beechwood vs. Prestonsburg

This is not a District game but it will tell us a lot about Prestonsburg.  Both teams enter undefeated.  The Blackcats have only faced one tough team, Breathitt County, who they took down 27-20.  This will be a good challenge and should help prepare P'burg for a deep playoff push.
