Beyond the Box Scores

Saying Goodbye

As the playoffs continue and the college football season comes to a close, we say goodbye to those players that have meant so much to us.

Boyz II Men sang "it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday".  It's also hard to say goodbye to those football players that we have covered the last several years.  Maybe it's harder for me this year because these Seniors were Sophomores when I started, and I have been calling their names on air since I first got here.

Many people may not believe that we care as much about these players as we do.  When I saw the Pulaski County - Clay County score I not only thought 'The Maroons advance", I also thought this is the end of my getting to call Zach Lewis' name on Friday nights.  He has gone through several nicknames since he's been here, including his original "Zach 360".  (As in, he puts up numbers like someone playing a football game on X-Box 360.)  He will be missed.

I will also miss several other players, such as Hunter Adams of Middlesboro.  It's hard not to miss a man that you nickname "Mr. Sports Overtime."  He has been a weekly fixture on Sports OT and when his career comes to an end, I know that I will miss him.

There are several other players that I will miss as their careers wrap-up.  Including Charlie "Tim Tebow of the Mountains" Banks at Letcher Central and Allen Hensley at Harlan.  The list is long so I won't go on.

I also had to say goodbye to the three Seniors that played their final game at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday.  David Jones, Tyler Sexton and J.J. Housley all played their final game at home.  Following their careers has been a joy.  All 3 represented the Mountains with class and dignity.  I felt honored to get to share Senior Day activities with them and their families.

I wish all of this years Seniors the best of luck.  Who knows how I'll feel after the basketball season.

If you would like to say goodbye to any Seniors that have wrapped up their Football/Volleyball/Cross Country/Golf careers this season, feel free to leave a comment.  Seniors you will be missed.  Good luck and God Bless.
