What a great finish to the High School Football season in the Mountains. Hazard, Breathitt County and Bell County are all headed to Papa John's Stadium in Louisville to compete for a State Title. Here are some key facts and information to know:
Hazard vs. Beechwood
What a different story these two schools tell when it comes to State Titles. Beechwood has won 9 Titles, including 3 this decade. Hazard is making their first ever appearance in a State Championship game.
Breathitt County vs. Central
The Bobcats have some title game experience. They won back to back championships in 1995 and 96. They brought home another championship to Jackson in 2002. Central is the defending champs and they return most of last years Title team. This game could feature one of most exciting player-on-player matchups (even though those really don't happen much in football.) Channing Fugate and Central Linebacker Ridge Wilson will certainly meet up at some point. I would love to see who will get the best of that one.
Bell County vs. Bullitt East
It's not often that Bell County enters a game and is considered the "passing team". But the Bobcats have shown the ability to throw the ball effectively when other teams stack the box. Bullitt East loves to run a power ground game. They also use the counter play a lot... and with great success. This is an interesting game with 3 Bobcat coaches having sons on the team. It will be interesting to see how they interact with each other after the game, win or lose.
Our coverage of the 3 games will be unprecendented in WYMT history. We are sending Derek Forrest, Brian Milam, Steve Hensley, Peter O'Connor and our intern Casey Allen to cover the games. We have even recruited former WYMT Sports Director Brandon Hensley to join me on Sports Overtime on Friday. This is what you can expect to see, so plan accordingly.
Friday 4 - Fan package (Steve Hensley), Hazard Highlights and Post game comments.
Friday 6 - Fan package 2 (Steve Hensley), Breathitt Highlights, Hazard Highlights and Post game comments, Derek Forrest Live.
Friday 11 - More Steve Hensley coverage (You can never have too much Steve Hensley).
Sports Overtime - Extended Highlights and Post game comments from Hazard and Breathitt County. A preview of the Bell County game. A look back on the 10 year anniversary of the 1998 Middlesboro State Title team. A Derek Forrest montage package. A review of the days action from Louisville with Derek Forrest and Brian Milam.
You want more coverage than that? Okay... we'll also have 1 minute updates from Papa John's Stadium before the game, during halftime and after the game on both Friday and Saturday. This will arguably be the most covered sporting event in WYMT history (not counting the Mountain Classic of course).
The coverage is subject to change. You never know what's going to happen.
If you would like to see the complete games on TV, we've got you covered there as well. We are calling it "Championship Sunday". Starting at noon we will air all 3 championship games involving Mountain Teams.
Noon - Hazard vs. Beechwood
