The high school basketball season is not even a month old yet, however there have been some outstanding games that have already taken place in the mountains.

The high school basketball season is not even a month old yet, however there have been some outstanding games that have already taken place in the mountains.

Lets start with the girls. The opening night started with #9 Harlan County hosting #7 Letcher Central. This was a matchup of two teams that before the season started no one knew what to think about them. But as soon as this game tipped off, it was obvious that both of these team were better than everyone may have expected. Harlan County lost to the Lady Cougars that night 51-46 but since then has rolled off six straight victories, including wins over South Laurel and Middlesboro.

#7 Letcher Central's head coach Dickie Adams said before the year he didn't think his girls were ready for the season, but as of right now, they stand 7-1 with key wins over Harlan County, and Phelps. On December 13th, they only lost to #1 Breathitt County by four points 49-45.

Speaking of Breathitt County, the number one team in the Mountain Top Ten had an early key match-up with #3 Johnson Central which saw the Lady Kats come away with the 56-48 win, however they did lose a close game to #2 Clay County.

On the boys side of things. #1 Shelby Valley met up with Pikeville in a early season match-up that saw Pikeville leading at the break. But Valley was too strong and too conditioned as the Wildcats came away with the 84-60 win. But just when some people thought that the Valley would not lose to a mountain team this year, enter the Patriots of Knott County Central, threw that theory right out the window beating the Cats in the Hoopin it Up Classic 58-50.

#2 Knott Central had three big test early on before facing #1 Shelby Valley and should of been a warning sign. On December 9th, the Patriots beat #7 Letcher Central. Then on December 16th, they defeated June Buchanan, who I think will surprise a lot of people, especially if Garrison Collins plays as big as he should. Two days after beating JBS, the Patriots defeated #4 Hazard by two. So now the Patriots are 8-0 and could now become a big favorite to win the 14th region.

But at this point, it is way too early to tell who will end the season on top, but I do know that it has been fun to watch already and all you can do is sit back and enjoy the ride.
