What can you say about the Mountain Classic that hasn't been said already? It's a tournament that matches up some of the best talent east of I-75. It also provides scholarships to many deserving students (100 this year).
Now that the first round is in the books, we look ahead to the games on Thursday and Friday.
Clay County takes on Perry Central. The first one to 60 will probably win this one. (Actually, the first one to 50 will probably win this one.) Both teams played great defense in their first round games. Don't expect that to change in the second round. This is also a traditional Mountain Classic meeting. Both schools have traditionally been two of the better teams in the Tournament.
Knott County Central has a rematch with Hazard. The last time these two schools met it was one to remember with Knott Central winning at Hazard 54-52. Tate Cox took over the game for the Patriots. Hazard had just gotten their football players back and may not have been ready to go. But Knott Central is getting production out of other players besides Cox and Stamper. Zach Davis, Braxton Ratliff and Logan Bartrum are also putting up some numbers.
Consolation Round (Thursday)
Usually you don't get too excited about a Consolation Round game, but this is an exception as Letcher Central meets up with East Ridge. Both teams have the talent to win a lot of ball games. Both have good guard play and a big man in the middle. This should be a fun game.
The other game lacks intrigue. A depleted Allen Central team faces Johnson Central. The Eagles have several good players including Sophomore center Cody Parker who had 16 in their first round game.
All the games will be streamed live on wymtnews.com. The Semi-Final games on Friday will be live on WYMT. The Third place and Championship games will also be live on WYMT on Saturday.
