The Harlem Globetrotters have been beating up on the poor Washington Generals for a long, long time. The last time the Generals won was back in 1979... at least according to what they said during the game.
So with that in mind here are a couple of tips to help out the Generals:
1.) Try using a zone defense. Sticking with Man-to-man only doesn't seem to be working. A lot of people criticized Billy Gillispie for not going to a zone defense. I think the same may be true here.
2.) When the Globetrotters start using the weave don't chase them on defense. Stay between your man and the basket. That's fundamental basketball.
3.) Stop settling for so many jumpers. Drive to the basket and get to the line.
4.) Set some screens.
5.) Utilizing things like the "remote controlled ball" and putting a plastic lid on the basket to stop the Globetrotters were very effective. Use more of that.
6.) Quit falling for the same tricks every game. Seriously, they have been using the same "ball on string" gag for 50 years.
Anyway, it was a very enjoyable time. I'm glad I went. And I'm impressed that Jim Caldwell actually hit a free throw. How many people can say that they scored against the Harlem Globetrotters.
