Week 1 Preview
#1 Breathitt County @ Sheldon Clark
The Sheldon Clark Cardinals open their season at home with the top ranked team in the Mountains. The Cardinals are a team that have won the games they're supposed to and lost the ones they're supposed to. This would be a good start to changing that. Austin Stepp returns at QB for Sheldon Clark and will be counted on to put some points on the board. When it comes to Breathitt County the discussion begins with Channing Fugate. The UT committ tore apart Mercer County for 5 TDs in the Bobcats opening win. Sheldon Clark will have to find a way to slow him down. Many have tried, none have succeeded.
Paintsville @ #5 Prestonsburg
The Tigers need momentum. The Blackcats need to not lose it. Paintsville got stomped at home 54-20 by Lawrence County. Prestonsburg pulled a big upset over Belfry 28-21. It was their first win over the Pirates since 2001. These two schools seem to enjoy playing each other. The Blackcats need to make sure that they don't look past the Tigers to the Honey Bowl at Breathitt County next week.
Boyd County @ #6 Belfry (Pike County Bowl)
The Belfry Pirates came out flat last week at Prestonsburg and fell behind early. They made a strong late push, but came up short. Philip Haywood will have his team ready to go this week. The last time Belfry lost in the Pike County Bowl was in 2005 to Henry Clay. You can watch this game live on WYMT Friday night at 8:35.
Shelby Valley vs. Pike Central (Pike County Bowl)
This is one of the more intriguing games of the weekend. New Shelby Valley head coach Jeff Norman meets up with new Pike Central head coach John Chapman. Both teams also return a lot of talent from last year. Both teams want to make a statement to open the season. You can watch this game live on wymtnews.com
starting at 6:05 on Saturday.
Pulaski County @ #9 Somerset (Ray Correll Bowl)
This game features two teams that had similar experiences in their opening game with different results. Somerset pulled the upset of #10 Knox Central in the Pioneer Bowl. Pulaski County entered their opening game in the top 10 before falling in the final seconds to North Laurel. If you like athletic quarterbacks, then this is the game for you. Eric Manning of Somerset and Chris Muse of Pulaski County both are easily capable of combining for 300 yards rushing and passing.
Out of the Mountains
Clay County is coming off a big 48-0 win over Lynn Camp. They now face some stiffer competition. The Tigers hit the road to Scott County. The Cardinals open the season ranked 9th in Class 6A
