Week 2 High School Football Preview
#4 Prestonsburg @ #7 Breathitt County (Honey Bowl)
This is our Game of the Week. Prestonsburg rolls into Jackson 2-0 with wins over Belfry and Breathitt County. Breathitt County is coming in off a 6-0 loss to Sheldon Clark. I will be interested to see if Channing Fugate gets more than 4 carries in this game. I think he will. Michael Burchett has been excellent at QB for the Blackcats. Jade Haddix is looking for a better performance this week for the Bobcats. If history is any kind of indication, this game should be close. Prestonsburg has won 4 of the last 6 times these two teams have played.
#1 Bell County @ Johnson Central
Bell County travelled to Eagle Field last season for a Preseason scrimmage. I was there. It was a hard hitting scrimmage. Johnson Central goes in down a few players due to injuries and suspensions. But never county out the Golden Eagles, especially at home. Bell County needs to win the battle at the line. If they do that, the Bobcats will be okay. Either way, expect a lot of running in this game.
South Laurel @ #10 North Laurel
It's the battle for the right to call themselves the "Best" Laurel. South Laurel has won 12 of the 17 meetings. But North comes in on a roll with victories over 2 quality teams. South got some momentum last week knocking off Williamsburg. This will be a ground battle. Both coaches told me earlier in the week that to be successful they will have to stop the other teams running backs. Chris Larkey says that his Jaguars are the underdog because of South's strength. Not sure if I agree with him, but it won't be a cake walk. It never is in rivalry games.
#8 Letcher Central @ Hazard
This could very well be a game for a spot in the Mountain Top 10. Letcher Central is off to a 2-0 start thanks to 2 good defensive performances. The Cougars gave up 6 points in both games. Hazard needs to smooth out some wrinkles from their first game. They had 13 penalties in their win over Leslie County. They will need to be more focused to beat the Cougars.
South Floyd @ Jenkins
This game intrigues me. Both teams could use an early season win to gain momentum and self confidence.
Any thoughts on these games?
