The morning session of the girls All "A" Classic State Tournament is in the books. Here are some notes from the day:
Harlan 62 Whitefield Academy 47
The Lady Dragons advance to the second round of the State Tournament for the first time since 1997 when they advanced to the Semi-Finals. Harlan used a 16-9 edge in the second quarter to open a 9 point halftime lead and never looked back. Four Lady Dragons reached double figures with two players recording double-doubles. Ashely Mullins and Sarah Scruggs led Harlan with 15 a piece, Cheyenne Hamblin had 12 while Anne Corey Johnson scored 11. Scruggs and Johnson both had double figures in rebounds with 12 for Scruggs and 10 for Johnson. Madison Ball led the team with 5 assists. Harlan did an excellent job of knocking down shots, hitting 50% from the floor (22/44). Harlan faces Holy Cross (Louisville) on Friday at 9 AM.
Holy Cross (Lou.) 67 Betsy Layne 53
Betsy Layne was strong in the middle of the game, but struggled at the beginning and end. Holy Cross led 18-5 after the first quarter and used a 24-9 4th quarter to put away the Lady Cats. The Senior guard trio of Taylor Hott (19 points, 6 rebounds), Lindsey Martin (14 points) and Megan Hamilton (11 points, 5 assists) led Betsy Layne. It was Betsy Layne's first trip to the All "A" State Tournament since 2004.
