Quarterfinal Round

Here is my recap of the WYMT coverage area teams participating in the quarterfinal round.

Today was a day of ebbs and flows.

For Clay County, they fell to Rowan County 48-31 (which, by the way is there lowest point total in state since they were there in 1993). If you look at the numbers, the Lady Tigers didn't do a bad job. They shot 41 percent from the floor compared to Rowan County's 30 percent, but here was the real difference in the numbers. Clay County was only able to get off 29 total shots in the game only hitting 12 of them as opposed to Rowan County who was 50 percent from behind the arc, 7 of 14 from downtown.

Whitney Belle Jackson, Sabrina Smith and Kayla Smith all contributed with 8 points each, but what may have been the deciding factor was Jordan Phillips' zero points on only 0-2 from the floor.

In the end for the Lady Tigers it was a good run that was probably stopped a little short, but they should all be proud of getting rid of the first round hump that has haunted them several time during their trip to state.

For Rockcastle County, their day ran a little bit smoother. Although the game was tight for most of the contest, the Lady Rockets dominated in certain aspects of the game.

Sara Hammond for one, ended the night with 7 blocks and dominated in the post. However, the Lady Cardinals of Clark County held Hammond to a mere 3 of 10 from the floor.

Jackie Alexander led the way for the Lady Rockets in the quarterfinals as she dropped 23 points and added 8 boards to her line.

Rockcastle County is now on a mission. Thursday night was the first time the Lady Rockets got out of the first round in a state tournament, and now they find themselves one win away from playing for a state title.

If they can play solid, no mistake basketball like they have done all season the that goal is definitely a possibility.

But first up for the Lady Rockets they will have to get passed the Lady Cardinals of Scott County.
