One has to wonder if UK fans are getting spoiled by John Calipari and his great recruiting classes. The Kentucky Wildcats had a banner Signing Day on Wednesday. They nabbed Brandon Knight (Rated #1 PG by several services), got an official letter of intent from Enes Kanter (who was dominating at the Nike Hoops Summit) and got a commitment from Michael Gilchrist (the top player in the 2011 Class). Several other players still hang out there that could end up at UK. If just one of them were to sign (and from what I read it could easily be 2 or 3 more), we would once again see a Top 10 Class and very likely a Top 5 Class. UK fans can't get enough.
I'm sitting here watch Homer Bailey struggle through another early season game. I decided to do some digging. He appears to get better as the season goes along. After getting shelled early in 2009, he finished the season strong. In Bailey's last 9 starts of 2009 he threw at least 5 innings and gave up 3 runs or less each time. Here's hoping that this trend continues.
Hello Miss Basketball, Welcome to Barbourville
Former Miss Kentucky Basketball Rebecca Gray is transferring from Kentucky to Union College. She started her college career with North Carolina before transferring to UK. Gray, a 5-10 guard, played in 33 of 36 games for UK this season, averaging 5.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 19.1 minutes per game. She was the team’s second-leading three-pointer shooter, hitting 34.9 percent from beyond the arc (30-of-86). Let me be one of the first to say hello and welcome to the Mountains.
Bentley Engineering A Turn Around
Perry Central Assistant Basketball Coach Jon Bentley is taking over the Estill County Engineers program. The former Marshall and EKU player has his work cut out for him. The Engineers were 4-23 last season, including going 2-10 against the 14th Region. I wish him the best of luck. He's always been wonderful to work with.
Morehead Mountains Top Marshall
The Morehead State Eagles got strong performances from 3 players from the Mountains to bet Marshall 15-6 on Tuesday. QUentin Morgan from Leslie County started the game and got the win, his third of the season. Trey Smith from South Laurel came on in relief and pitched 4 shutout innings, picking up the save. Paintsville grad Daneil Pugh went 2-5 with a run and an RBI.
If anyone has any other random notes that they would like to pass along, please feel free to post them.
