Shocking Night of Softball in the Mountains

Several upsets have taken place around the mountains in softball. Here is a recap of a few.

On Monday night, the Middlesboro Lady Jackets were the favorites to win the 52 district going in to their first round game with Harlan County. But inspired play by Lady Bears shortstop Johnnie Parker combined with a sick Randi Jo Powers on the mound were the perfect ingredients for an upset.

The Lady Bears would go on to win 8-2 snapping Middlesboro's 11 year run as district champions. That would be the spark they needed going into Tuesday night's game with Bell County.

Harlan County and Bell County found themselves scoreless going in to the top of the 7th inning until Sarah Evans came up big with a two run single to left center to give the Lady Bears a two run lead to win the 52 district championship 2-0.

What about the 57th district? Johnson Central, Magoffin Co, Sheldon Clark, Paintsville and Lawrence County made for one of the toughest districts when it came to girls basketball. That statement could possibly hold true for softball as well. Monday night Paintsville defeated Sheldon Clark by the score of 6-4 and Tuesday night had a match-up with Johnson Central. Lawrence County faced Magoffin County and was able to take care of business 9-1.

But the focus was the Lady Eagles taking on the Lady Tigers. During the regular season, Johnson Central defeated Paintsville pretty handily 6-0 and 14-1 in the two contest. But anyone who watches sports knows when it comes to rivalries, it is extremely tough to beat a team three times in a season.

Well Tuesday night was the night for the Lady Tigers as they defeated Johnson Central 3-2 knocking the Lady Eagles out of postseason play.

Lawrence County will now meet up with Paintsville in the finals of the 57th district tournament to be played Thursday night at 6:30pm.
