There's a First Time For Everything

There are so many wonderful "firsts" in our lives. For two area softball teams, they both had a first on Wednesday. And another first is on the way.

There are many memorable "firsts" in our lives.  My first car was a Dodge Aries station wagon (and yes, it was as exciting as it sounds).  My first story here was on the The Via Ferrata Climbing Center in Wolfe County.  My first kiss was with an Irish exchange student many years ago.  My point is that "firsts" are never forgotten.

For the Jenkins and Somerset softball programs, Wednesday night will never be forgotten.

That is the night that both programs captured their first ever Region Titles.  Jenkins topped Estill County 8-2, ending the Lady Engineers streak of 5 consecutive Region titles.  Somerset knocked off East Jessamine 7-3.

While the ending is the same, the journey there has been quite different.  The Lady Cavaliers have been close, losing to Estill County in the Championship game in 2008.  For Somerset, this was a year of several first.  Included in that is their first ever playoff win.  They had never even won a game at the District Tournament before this season.

No matter the path travelled, the point is that they are both headed to the Owensboro... happily.  And one of these two teams is guaranteed another "first"... their first win at the State Tournament.  In a twist of fate, Jenkins and Somerset face each other in the first round of the State Tournament.

I say congratulations to both on a well deserved Region Title.  And I wish you both the best of luck at the State Tournament.  I have no doubt you will do the Mountains proud.
