Beyond the Box Scores

Day 1 of the Mountain Classic is in the books

Day 1 of the Mountain Classic was delayed, but now in the books. Today set the bar high with close games and great performances, we have high expectations for tomorrow.

The weather may have postponed Monday's activities, but it couldn't mess with Tuesday's line-up of games. Three games on the docket, we start with the No. 6 Cordia Lions taking on the Lawrence County Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs took advantage of their free throw opportunities and that was the difference in the game. Lawrence County beat Cordia 71 to 61.

For the first time ever in the Mountain Classic we have a girls bracket. Four teams all evenly matched, game 1 the No. 5 Magoffin County Lady Hornets playing the No. 4 Harlan County Lady Black Bears, and this game had to go to extra time to decide the winner. The Lady Hornets, lead by Sophomore Guard Jazzy Howard, beat the Harlan County Lady Black Bears 67-62. They await the winner of Wednesday's game between Leslie County and Bell County.

The final game on the night was the No. 2 Perry Central Commodores taking on the Bell County Bobcats. The Commodores were led in scoring by Braxton Beverly with 16, who left with an ankle injury in the 2nd half of the game. The Bobcats would put a run together, but the size of Perry Central proved too much, they advance over the Bobcats 64 to 46. They face the Lawrence County Bulldogs Thursday in Semi-Final 1 at 6:30pm at the Morton Combs Athletic Complex.
