We are nearing the end of the 2012 high school football season, and although there are still two weeks remaining in the regular season, this Friday night, is the final week for district play.
Four teams within the coverage area have already secured district championships.
Class 2A, District 7 - Somerset Briar Jumpers
Class 3A, District 4 - Bell County Bobcats
Class 3A, District 7 - Breathitt County Bobcats
Class 5A, District 7 - Pulaski County Maroons
That means no matter what happens on the field Friday night, win or lose, these teams will have a #1 seed in the playoffs in their respective classes.
There are four teams that "control their own destiny" if you will. If they win Friday, they will be crowned district champs. Pretty simple. Those teams are:
Class A, District 5 - Williamsburg Yellow Jackets (vs. Lynn Camp)
Class A, District 6 - Hazard Bulldogs (vs. Pineville)
Class A, District 8 - Pikeville Panthers (vs. Allen Central)
Class 5A, District 8 - Harlan County Black Bears (vs. Perry Central)
Finally, there are four games taking place between teams that are unbeaten within district play. All teams involved in these games are assured a home playoff game, but it is a winner-take-all matchup with a district title on the line.
Class 2A, District 8 - Prestonsburg Blackcats vs. Leslie County Eagles
Class 3A, District 8 - Pike Central Hawks vs. Belfry Pirates
Class 4A, District 6 - Russell County Lakers vs. Knox Central Panthers
Class 4A, District 8 - Ashland Blazer Tomcats vs. Johnson Central Golden Eagles
It's a great time of year for high school football in Kentucky, and in the Mountains. Playoff seedings are taking shape and teams are making their final preparations for what they hope is a deep playoff run. The weather may be a little chilly, but it's perfect weather for some Mountain football. Friday's schedule is full of great games with a lot at stake, so get out there and cheer on your team!
