Hats off to Magoffin County

The Lady hornets got big game experience in State Tournament Last Week.

Number Three Magoffin County was the only team in the WYMT Coverage Area to make it out of the first round of the Kentucky Touchtone Energy All “A” State Tournament in Frankfort.

But this was historic for the Lady Hornets because in Wednesday’s 73-65 Victory over University Heights, gave the school its first EVER State Victory in ANY Sport.

Think about it.  In the 100+ years the school system has been around, it was the first victory in any sport.

Steve Miller has now taken two teams to the State Tournament.  (Magoffin County won the 15th Region back in 2006, but fell in the first round to Elizabethtown).

On Friday, the Lady Hornets fell to defending All “A” State Champion Owensboro Catholic, 49-46.  Despite trailing for most of the game and by double digits with less than three minutes to go in the game, they fought tooth-and-nail to try and win this game.

To me, that’s a team that has the opportunity to play in another State Tournament down the road.  The desire and passion to play until the final horn is a team that wants success.

Jamie Castle, Jassmine Howard, Nichole Fletcher, Morgan Arnett, Madison Reed and Morgan Connelley are a special group that knows their season isn’t over.  Playing in one of the toughest districts in possibly the state in the 57th, gets this team battle ready for the region tournament.  They all said playing in the State Tournament last week gives them plenty of big game experience to help win in March.

This team is young.  Magoffin County has only two seniors.  So you can expect the Lady Hornets to be very good for a very long time.
