So Tuesday seems like a good day to start posting a weekly blog! Hope you enjoy your weekly "On This Day...Sports Edition!"
On This Day (June 21st)...
1970- Detroit Tigers shortstop Cesar Gutierrez became first modern era player to get 7 hits in one game (6 singles and a double in a 12-inning victory over the Cleveland Indians)
1979- The 3-point line was approved for a one-year trial in the NBA (the line was 22 feet at the baseline and 23'9" at the top of the arc)
1986- Auburn Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson turned down a $7.6 million contract from NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 3-year, roughly one million dollar contract to play baseball for the Kansas City Royals (Jackson of course later played football for the Los Angeles Raiders from 1987-1990...earning a pro bowl selection in 1990)
1992- Tom Kite won his first major at 42, beating Jeff Sluman by two shots in the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach
