1895- Former World Heavyweight Champion Boxer (1921-26) Jack Dempsey was born. Dempsey fought in 83 bouts (66 wins, 51 by knockout - 6 losses, 1 by knockout - 11 draws) His last two fights were at Old Yankee Stadium and Soldier Field.
1931- Two-time (1959 and 66) U.S. Open Championship golfer Billy Casper was born. Casper also won the 1970 Masters. Casper led the PGA Tour money list in 1966 and 68 (51 career PGA Tour wins)
1995- New Jersey Devils sweep Detroit Red Wings in 4 games
1984- Former Duke basketball player J.J. Redick was born. In the 2006 NBA Draft, the Orlando Magic selected Redick in the first round with the 11th overall pick. Redick set ACC records for most points (recently surpassed by Tyler Hansbrough), consecutive free throws made and most career ACC tournament points...set several Duke records including most points in a single season. Redick is currently the all-time leading scorer at Duke.
