Week Zero Instant Classic

Week Zero has come and gone.

With the start of the high school season Friday night, there were many close games:

  • Perry County Central defeating Prestonsburg 35-34 on a touchdown run with just by the Commodores’ Kyle Huff with just two seconds left.

  • Pikeville escaped Harlan Green 21-14 as Panthers Quarterback, Randy Maynard finding the end zone with under a minute left.

Saturday proved to be just as good as Friday with what I’m calling a “Week Zero Instant Classic.”

Letcher County Central, participating in the inaugural Roy Kidd Bowl at Eastern Kentucky University provided enough fireworks as they rallied to defeat Madison Central 35-34 in Double Overtime.

The Cougars, led by Senior Quarterback, Logan Johnson found Keaston Hall on a 4th and Goal from the 35-yard line (he was sacked the previous two plays to push them back 25 yards from the 10-yard line) after it was tipped by an Indian defender.  That allowed Hall to reel it in and fall right on the goal line.

But the heroics did not stop there.  Linebacker/Kicker Sidney Fields, who did not make a field goal or PAT all night, (LCC had a chance to win it in Regulation, but FG was no good) lined up dead center with the goal.

 The Snap.

 The Hold.

 The Boot.

 It’s Good!

Letcher Co. Central – 35

Madison Central – 34

Jubilation on the Cougars sideline as LCC earned its first win of the 2011 season over a Madison Central team that was down 18-0 in the second quarter before the Indians rallied.

The second half was back and forth, as teams traded touchdowns all the way in to the Double Overtime period.

Johnson had an impressive 2011 debut.  19-31, 176-yards, 4 TDs.  He also had 17 carries for 70-yards. Johnson had a spectator on the sidelines as former Leslie County, UK, and NFL Quarterback Tim Couch was in attendance Saturday.  Couch and Johnson are cousins. More on that later.

So, celebrate on, Cougars.  It was a well-earned victory.  But it does not get easier as the Breathitt County Bobcats head your way this Friday Night.

Below is a link of the highlights from Letcher County Central’s “Week Zero Instant Classic” against Madison Central.
