As most of you read this, I will probably be in the middle of surgery to have my prostate removed, and hopefully all the cancer with it. My surgeon tells me the operation Thursday morning will last 3-4 hours. He says near the end of the operation, he will be able to tell my wife how it went, and whether he thinks I have been cured. Cured. There is a magnificent word when you are talking about cancer. We are optimistic, prayerful, and grateful. Optimistic the surgery will go well, and all the cancer will be removed. Prayerful because I am in God's hands. Grateful for my Lexington urologist who found the cancer after five-years of annual prostate exams. And very grateful for all the support and wonderful people who have sent cards, notes, letters, and messages.

I am of course nervous, but also ready to get this done, and move on with life...whatever the outcome. In addition to removing the cancer, we will have serious side-affects to deal with- incontinence and impotence are the biggies. Saying that.... you can see why the support of your wife/partner is so crucial. This is a very, very personal and intimate disease. But I hope my openness about this common cancer in men opens the door for other guys to pay attention to their health. I will be away from the news desk for a while, but I hope I have good news for you after my surgery. Talk to you soon my friends!
