Hey Folks...I wanted to give a you a quick update heading into the new work week, plus I haven't posted since the middle part of last week. Of course the winds have been cranking all day on Sunday with gusts over 40 miles per hour for much of the day. These winds out of the south really helped to crank temperatures up into the upper 50s for highs Sunday and we haven't seen much drop off after sunset so expect a mild start to Monday. A cold front with an incredible temperature differences on either side is working toward Kentucky so expect drastic changes to begin the week. Just to give you an example, at 9pm Eastern Sunday it was 59 degrees in St. Louis Missouri in the east and 9 degrees in Kansas City Missouri in the west....WOW! A Winter Storm Watch is already posted for much of the Bluegrass for late Monday and into Tuesday, and this storm definitely has potential.

Monday morning looks a bit wet and fairly mild (temps in the low 50s), especially in the east but expect a very quick drop into the 30s by the mid/late morning...maybe sooner here in the  bluegrass. It appears the front will slide through the state and then check up a bit just to our south. As this occurs a very dense area of low level cold air will move in over our region so we should be setup for some overrunning into Monday night and Tuesday.

The initial concern for late Monday will be a bit of freezing rain with some of the lingering moisture behind the front thanks to temperatures just below the freezing mark. A "wave" of low pressure should slide along the front Monday night into Tuesday morning and really increase the threat of wintry weather. Taking a look at the 00Z NAM this evening...it is really trending colder and farther south with the dense cold air so it is looking more like a decent snow event here in the bluegrass and points north, with the wintry mix making it farther south now. There is a good slug of moisture right overhead in the cold air by Tuesday morning. Have a look and it would make the morning commute Tuesday a mess to say the least.

NAM Tuesday morning

Regardless (and as always) a few miles will make a huge difference and we'll really have to keep an eye on things into Monday. I fully expected the Watch to be upgraded in some capacity early Monday for later in the day. I'll obviously have an update Monday afternoon.

Just FYI...there is some indication the "old" way of doing things may have a shot at returning to this blog...i.e the "near real time" comment postings! Don't get your hopes up yet, but we have a shot to make it happen.

I'll talk to you soon.

That's all for now!

T.G.

Hopefully our road crews will be ready to go, since I will be driving to work in Lexington tomorrow morning. As an aside, I was on a transport to Frenchburg friday and everything was covered in snow. It was so gorgeous. I think they got about 5 or 6 inches.

Thrust of cold air more to a southerly direction as the case with a cold air mass that gives denver sub zero weather we will be on the eastern boundery. With overrunning looks like mostly freezing rain here and snow around the ohio river or even farther north. Looks to be a messy commute tomorow with the biggest problem scraping the tenth inch of ice off of you windshield. However if the as tg has said cold air is historicaly dence and defies history then we could be in for a bulls eye snow. Records are made to be broken and defying winter logic once in a while is what makes weather so exiting. so in short ice looks like the main threat but snow will be very close. I agree with tg that this could get bad if things change just a bit.
