Let Us Never Forget
On July 3rd, the Tri City area will pay tribute to a former Redskin, 1SG John Blair. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for 10:00pm at the CHS football field. Mayor Ronnie Hampton will speak, hundreds will gather to reflect and honor a man from our hometown that paid the ultimate sacrifice for our great Nation.
Today, I’d like to pose the question, who are your heroes? Athletes, movie stars, politicians, rock stars? One of the unyielding beauties of our free Nation is that it’s your choice. Men and women, much like John Blair ensured this and all liberties are afforded to us as Americans. The sentiment “self-made man” echoed throughout the comments in tribute to our brother. He was, in every sense. John was a dedicated family man, soldier, police officer, servant, leader, and friend to many. Again, who are your heroes? This Fourth of July weekend, take time to ponder that question. The next time you are in an airport, will you shake a Service Members hand? Do you ever thank a police officer or firefighter for running towards harms way? Today, my heart goes out to 1SG John Blair’s family. Saying thank you or I’m sorry seems insufficient, not enough.
The rank of First Sergeant is a highly respected position in the United States Military. To best describe, below is a poem that outlines the role of the First Sergeant:
FIRST SERGEANT CREED
THE FIRST SERGEANT MARCHES AT THE REAR TO URGE ON THOSE WHO FALTERED INSURING NONE FALLS BEHIND LEST THE FORCES STRENGTH BE ALTERED
THE COMMANDER POSITIONED OUT IN FRONT HAS THE GLORY OF ONE WHO LEADS BUT NE’ER FORGET WHO’S AT THE REAR TAKING CARE OF EACH TROOP’S NEEDS
THE CADENCE COMES FORTH LOUD AND CLEAR SO INSPIRED THE MARCH WON’T STOP. THEY KNOW WHO’S WATCHING OVER THEM THE ONE THEY CALL "TOP"

First Sergeant John Blair was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan on June 20th, 2009. He was leading from the front.
John Blair is one of my heroes. Rest in Peace, and may God eternally bless you old friend.
Humbly,
Freddie Maggard

My blessing to First Sergeant John Blair who now lives inside the heart of Good Freddie Maggard, may all be well as Cursed was that day when judah died so is the day When he lives Posted by: Eddie Location: Pike My heroes are those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country and countrymen, as well as those who still carry the flag, retired or active. May God bless each and everyone of them and carry them in the palm of his hand. Glad to see you back on here old friend, your writings were sorely missed! We've got to come up with a "rounding 3rd and heading home" catch phrase relating to football for you! Looking forward to this season even more now. Posted by: Peggy Location: Lynch, KY My heroes are the men and women fighting for our country, gospel preachers, and a few presidents but not the one we have now. |
