Snowfall in the region

A winter storm is battering the mountains. The system has dropped several inches of snow all across the area.

The system has dropped several inches of snow all across the area.

Thousands of people are in the dark. In Pike County alone there are 34,000 people without power.

Crews are out trying to restore power in every county.

WYMT is also off the air due to a power outage at the station and at our tower site on Buffalo Mountain.

Perry, Pike, and Whitley Counies are under a state of emergency. People in those areas are asked to stay off the roads if at all possible.

We will try to update the web as much as possible.

Emergency shelters have opened in several counties.

- Harlan County: Harlan County High School
- Pike County: Phelps High School, Shelby Valley High School, East Ridge High School, Johns Creek Elem. (at noon)
-Breathitt County: Jackson Fire Dept.
-Knott County: Carrie Community Center
-Leslie County: Leslie Co. Emergency Center
-Letcher: Community Centers in Jenkins, Ermine, Colson, Boone Fork
-Whitley County: Whitley Co. Community Center
