Eastern Kentucky Weather

Stormy Skies Are Coming

The rain will begin in most areas early on Friday. There will be some breaks thrown into the mix, but it is the beginning of a very wet period!

The rain is something I know that I have really wanted to see come our way. Now, it looks like we are going to see chances for it and perhaps in some cases plenty of it! Here's what the U.S. Drought Monitor looks like. I'm only looking at this right now because of forest fire issues. I am not concerned about water supplies getting low or anything like that.

Things are fine around here... only some of our areas are even considered "Abnormally Dry"

With the wet spell coming our way... the dryness will be something we'll have to worry less about for a little while. The wet run will come in waves.

Wave 1

Early on Friday morning, we'll see moisture begin to lift into the area. This round will generally be on the light side.

WRF Fri AM                                                                               WRF Fri PM

GFS Fri AM                                                                               GFS Fri PM

You see here that the first wave is pretty light. Notice by the afternoon image it is clearing our area. There should be a lull in the action and it will then pick up again.

Wave 2

The next wave will roll in here for Saturday mid-morning to Saturday afternoon. Some of that could have interesting characteristics like a stray thunderstorm, but the real deal won't come until later in the day.

WRF Sat Afternoon                                   WRF Sat Evening

GFS Sat Afternoon                                       GFS Sat Evening

A lot of similar things going on here! General light rain during the mid-morning to afternoon and then both are hinting at the next wave. What I see is very close, but not close enough. Not that I expect that. What we'll all need to really prepare for is late Saturday evening and into Sunday morning. That's when the 3rd wave runs across KY. This will be the make it or break it timeframe. We'll have to watch very closely for severe weather close to this period.
