Good Tuesday evening from the Sky Alert Weather Center. Today's weather wasn't fun at all, plenty of snow flew across the region with a few locations picking up around an inch or so. Once the snow stopped most of it melted off pretty quickly though. Skies are clearing out tonight and that will allow temperatures to drop into the 20s tomorrow morning. A Freeze Warning is out for all of Eastern Kentucky, plants are going to have a hard time surviving the kind of cold we will see tonight.
I wanted to take a break from talking about the weather, and talk about how we present to you the weather forecast. It was an incredibly exciting day here at WYMT, as we launched our newscasts into high definition. This is a huge move for the station, and it's a process I've been very excited about being apart of.
Brandon Orr, Brandon Robinson and myself have been working since late last year on getting these new HD weather graphics up and running, and I figured I'd share with you how we got to this point. The process for us started back late last year, in late November or early December when we received the basis for our new graphics. The graphics department at our parent company sent us a bunch of new graphic elements to work with. Boxes, banners, background movies, fonts, all the things needed to make shiny new weather graphics.
Our team loaded those graphics on to our new HD Weather Graphics computer and began building a few mock 7-Day Forecast to set a style for our new look. Here's a peak at a few of the early concepts.
So you can see we already had our background and logo locked in at this point, so for us we had to find a design that we liked the best. I know when I was designing the new look of our graphics I tried to keep three things in mind: simple, clean, and sharp. Our graphics hadn't had a major overhaul in several years, and a lot of things have changed in modern design, so I wanted to incorporate a lot of modern design thought into our graphics. After piecemealing different elements of each mock 7-Day together, this is what we came up with.
So this is the 7-Day you will see from here on in, and it set the design specifics for the rest of our graphics. This is the most important graphic we make everyday, so wanted everything to be just right and serve as a basis for everything else we make. You can see how we took elements from that in some of our other graphics:
Well I hope you guys enjoyed the tour behind the creative process of getting our new HD graphics on the air. We hope they will serve you well and if you have any ideas or comments please feel free to share them!
