More Snow In The Forecast

Mother Nature's Valentine's Day gift to Eastern Kentucky... more snow.

Well that was certainly a snow storm we had last night and this morning across southern and eastern Kentucky.  We had several locations along the KY/VA border pick up more than a foot of snow!  Check out some of the official reports the National Weather Service at Jackson received.

...WINTER PRECIPITATION TOTALS ACROSS EAST KENTUCKY...

A MONSTER WINTER STORM...MOVING UP THE EAST COAST...BROUGHT SOME
HEFTY SNOWFALL AMOUNTS TO PORTIONS OF EASTERN KENTUCKY. THE FAR
NORTHERN AND FAR WESTERN COAL FIELDS DID NOT SEE A FLAKE...WHILE
LOCATIONS NEAR THE VIRGINIA BORDER RECEIVED LARGE AMOUNTS OF SNOW.
IN FACT...SEVERAL LOCATIONS IN LETCHER...PIKE AND HARLAN COUNTIES
SAW MORE THAN TEN INCHES OF SNOW. MOST LOCATIONS NEAR THE VIRGINIA
BORDER PICKED UP MORE THAN EIGHT INCHES.

A BIG THANKS GOES OUT TO OUR DEDICATED COOOPERATIVE WEATHER
OBSERVERS...TRAINED WEATHER SPOTTERS AND AMATUER RADIO OPERATORS FOR
THEIR TIMELY REPORTS. ALSO...MUCH APPRECIATION ALSO FOR EMERGENCY
PERSONEL AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC FOR THEIR REPORTS AS WELL. THE
TOTALS BELOW ARE SEPARATED BY AMOUNT AND ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE
FINAL AMOUNT FOR EACH LOCATION.

The storm definitely out performed expectations as it was stronger and moved farther west than we forecast.  And as we pointed out there was literally just 25 miles of difference between who got slammed by the storm and who saw just an inconvenience storm.  It's always extremely difficult to figure out where those heavier snow bands will set up.

As the old saying goes, "No rest for the weary," as we have another storm system set to move into the region Valentine's Day afternoon.  This one looks like it will hit areas that didn't get to much of a hit from this last storm a bit harder than the areas that took the hit this time.  Check out the GFS Model:

As you can see it's going to be a mixed bag of precipitation across Eastern Kentucky.  For folks south of the Mountain Parkway this mainly looks like a rain to snow event, with pretty low totals.  For folks north of the Mountain Parkway and especially up near I-64, this may be a decent snow maker.  I'm expecting slick roads up in central Kentucky Friday night into Saturday morning.  Check out the snow forecast from the GFS and NAM models:

As you can see, the GFS is a little more aggressive on the snow, but I think the rain will really cut totals down across the southern part of Kentucky.   Here's a look at our official forecast of of Thursday Evening.

The biggest impact regions will be from Mountain Parkway North and in the Mountains of Virginia and the coal fields of West Virginia.  2-5"s of snow will definitely cause some slick spots, but I don't think up north has to worry about many power outages.  Down in the mountains of Virginia that may be another story as we will still have a lot of snow on the trees and lines by tomorrow afternoon when this moves in.

Also one thing to be aware of tonight is a lot of the snow that fell and melted will refreeze into black ice.  I'm expecting a lot of slick roads across eastern Kentucky tonight and tomorrow morning, especially on untreated roads.
