Snow On the Pumpkins?

It's one of the hardest things to avoid in general conversation with people... what's going on with Sandy? I normally get weather questions but rarely do I get tropical questions!

The reason people are so interested in Sandy isn't the tropical factor... it's the wintry factor. Now national media has picked up on the potential "Superstorm" and when that happens it heightens everyone's weather senses. As they should be!!!! We really have a very unusual set-up happening.

First, you have Sandy

This hurricane is expected to roll up the east coast of the U.S.

Then you have this!

We are actually looking at Monday's forecast here... but you are seeing a trough right here in KY. It's a deep, long wave upper trough with the coldest air so far this season and to the southeast we have Hurricane Sandy moving along the east coast. The merger of these two features combined with a blocking high over the North Atlantic will set up a potentially historic storm for the East Coast early next week.

How will that play a role in our weather? One thing that I know without a shadow of a doubt is the significantly colder air will invade across KY. The other is where I begin to have questions... not many but some... that's the wintry weather impact! It has all the right ingredients to bring snow striaght into Kentucky. Fast forward a few days and I'd tell you snowfall is going to happen and you'd see the 1st snowfall accumulation graphic of the season. But with all of the uncertainty in the forecast I can't say that yet. It was literally moving back out to sea just a couple of days ago. Now it's heading deep into the Mid-Atlantic states.

Just like with any winter weather situation... I like to wait and really feel things out. By the weekend I will have a better understanding and at that time we'll start talking just how much of a hazard this system will be to the folks in east KY.

I'll try to post another update... if I am still awake.... later tonight! Otherwise, I'll sit the baby in the bouncy seat and turn Yo Gabba Gabba on and punch out details Friday morning.
