Over the past two weeks, I have met with and surveyed dozens of Central Kentucky employers. Sixty-eight percent of the employers have conducted or are planning to conduct a reduction in force due to the economic slowdown. In the manufacturing industry this percentage is much higher. I praise the companies that are making extra efforts to retain their employees by reducing hours, temporarily shutting down manufacturing, allowing voluntary leaves, and even accepting executive pay cuts. Many organizations have also instituted hiring freezes.

One bright spot, some companies are using this opportunity to upgrade their staff by hiring outstanding employees who have been laid off from other companies. Strong performers always have a better opportunity, especially in a down economy.

If you are a poor performer, improve now or risk losing your job. If you are often absent, it is no time to take an unnecessary sick day. If you are difficult to get along with, improve your demeanor. Now is the time for everyone to pitch in and help your company succeed. The life of your organization and your gainful employment may depend on it. If you have a job work extra hard to hang on to it.

I agree with everything except for sick days. Most people only miss when they are sick(to the thanks of the healthy fellow co-workers) I hope employers do not stoop so low as to fire sick employees.
