The words Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn are becoming integrated into our society’s everyday repertoire. In the past two hours, I have used LinkedIn to reconnect with an old business contact and Facebook to secure my weekend plans. In a recent poll of central Kentucky businesses, conducted by Hanna Resource Group, social networking in the workforce was rated as one of the top ten HR trends for ’09. According to their website, LinkedIn currently has over 36 million members in over 200 countries, including executives from all Fortune 500 companies. Generation X and Y employees spend a great deal of time on these sites; in fact, some companies have banned employees from accessing social networking sites because too many employees spent too much time updating their profiles and not enough time doing their jobs. On the other hand, many corporations are now using social and business online communities to improve communication between executives, middle management, and frontline employees, as well as to form bonds with their customers. The times are certainly changing and I am doing my best to keep up. Currently, Hanna Resource Group uses online networking to find and recruit top talent for clients who are searching for specialized skills. I have current profiles on Facebook, Linked In and Forbes CEO Network and will not hesitate to begin my membership with another site if I believe it can keep me connected to friends, colleagues, and/or potential business contacts.

Is your business using social networking to enhance communication with clients, customers, and the outside world? If so, how is it working?
