A new Congressional Budget Office report is dealing another blow to President Barack Obama’s health care plans.  The report says a highly touted plan to pay for the health care overhaul will actually save almost no money. The CBO says creating a powerful commission to recommend Medicare cuts would produce only about two billion dollars in savings in the next ten years.  The bill is expected to cost one trillion dollars.  The CBO Director outlined those figures in a letter to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.

Politico quotes a White House blog which downplays the CBO’s figures.  The blog was written by the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Peter Orszag.  The former CBO Director says the “point of the proposal was never to generate savings over the next decade.  Instead, the goal is to provide a mechanism for improving quality of care for beneficiaries and reducing costs over the long term.”  You can read the entire Politico article here.

Last week I discussed the value of the Congressional Budget Office.  Its goal is to provide a non-partisan reality check for lawmakers and a truth barometer for the public.  The CBO cuts through the political spin from both sides of the aisle.  Let’s hope that never changes.

In response to that article: Finding the Truth in Washington,  John from Harlan writes:

Neil, I have said this from the local to the national level; our elected officials forget that they work for the people and not the other way around.  It seems as if some of these officials think that they know best and the people should just take whatever they say as gospel.  What really flabbergast me is that some people do just that.  Folks, they would not have their job if it was not for us.  Neil is "spot on", we have to let our lawmakers know how we feel or we are going to get stuck eating a soup sandwich.  I did not want to use the other "S" word with sandwich.
