Former Governor Paul Patton is the new President of Pikeville College. The Board of Trustees announced the appointment this afternoon. Patton becomes the college’s 18th President.
Patton succeeds Dr. Michael Looney. He recently resigned due to health concerns.
The former Governor has served nearly 30 years on the school’s Board of Trustees. Patton says he hopes to make a good school even better, “I’m excited … a little bit shocked. This has come about very fast. Pikeville is a great institution. The cause of education is a great cause, something that I’m more than pleased to get back into in a different way that I have in the past.”
Patton says he will not take a salary. He plans to be on campus Friday morning.
Patton, known as the "Higher Education President", was the driving force behind the passage of Kentucky’s Higher Education Reform Act in 1977. He was the first Kentucky Governor in nearly 200 years to serve two successive terms. You can read the News Release from Pikeville College here.
