Last weekend hundreds of Kentuckians crossed the state border to shop in Tennessee. It’s an annual trek for many during the second weekend of August. That’s when the volunteer state holds its “Tax Free Weekend” for back-to-school supplies. Kentuckians cash in and Tennessee retailers reap the rewards.
At least one Kentucky lawmaker wants to keep those dollars in the Bluegrass. Democratic State Representative Bob Damron from the 39th District (Fayette and Jessamine County) has proposed a sales tax holiday three times before, but it’s never passed into law. Damron says will propose the idea again next year with the support of several lawmakers near the border. He says, “To have our retailers compete with Tennessee retailers, it’s almost imperative that we also provide the same incentive for people to buy at home.”
A recent WYMT on-line poll shows nearly 94% of those responding agree with Damron. I should mention this poll represents only the opinions of those who chose to participate and it should not be considered a scientific sample of public opinion.

Here are some of the comments you sent us regarding this issue:
Richard Atkins is originally from Harlan. He writes: Georgia has a "No Tax Holiday" that includes clothes, computer equipment, and other items. I think that it stimulates the economy more than the "Cash for Clunkers" that ultimately incurs more debt on consumers that are statistically already strapped!
Wanda from Harlan writes: My family was in Knoxville today to purchase school clothes for our teenage grandchildren.. Today I saw numerous people from our small town in Knoxville. In my opinion, a sales tax holiday would both generate sales and keep Kentuckians shopping in their home state.
Charity Lewis Metcalfe writes: This is the weekend for North Carolina to shop for school tax free. It really helps with all those back to school things.
Janet Flanary White writes: I agree also!!! My daughter is going to Tennessee tomorrow for the no tax day. Yep, Kentucky needs one!
Should Kentucky have a "tax free" holiday? Let me know what you think. I’ll share you comments here on the blog.
