Daniel Venters is likely a shoo-in for reelection to the 3rd Supreme Court District. It was widely expected that Court of Appeals Judge
Michael Caperton would challenge Venters, but he’s instead opted to pass on Kentucky’s highest court, for now, and run for reelection for his current seat.
The move should free up Venters, a scholarly type, to focus on his work at the Supreme Court.
Although Supreme Court races are non-partisan, they’re hardly non-political. Venters is close to Hal Rogers’ political operation and was widely seen as having the Congressman’s backing in any race. Caperton, meanwhile, is one of the more adept grass roots campaigners this writer has seen.
Judge Caperton issued this statement earlier today:
Most are aware of my interest in position of Justice for the Kentucky Supreme Court. While certainly a desirable position and one of great service to our Commonwealth, I’ve decided in favor of my daughters rather than my own interest.
Our lives are often guided by our thoughts and ideas. What seems to be a good idea or desirable thought may become, after reflection, not so good an idea or a less desirable thought. Regardless, my political ideas and thoughts are second in priority to my daughters, they are my family. In our current times, all our families need to be foremost in our thoughts.
Our family is very close. For instance my daughters, ages 15 and 17, will sit at home with me on a Saturday night, have popcorn and watch movies. Both of my daughters have politicked with me for several campaigns, most notably when we ran 3 campaigns in 4 years, ending in 2007 with the Court of Appeals campaign.
This is my oldest daughter’s last year at home before college; I certainly would regret any time not spent with her. My youngest daughter will be driving in January and I’ll invest in another car as well as teach her to drive. My daughters and I put forth tremendous effort in every campaign. As such, even a winning campaign still involves a “loss” to us. After a discussion with my daughters, we decided to enjoy life and for me to continue my term at the Court of Appeals.
I hope that all my friends and supporters have faith and confidence in me and in my decision not to seek the position of Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court.
I thank everyone for their faith, confidence and support and invite them to support me in my re-election in 2014.
