Mongiardo supporter says contribution will buy 'access'

FRANKFORT — The host of an upcoming fund-raiser for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Daniel Mongiardo has told potential contributors that their donation will buy access to the lieutenant governor and Gov. Steve Beshear.

In an e-mail, businessman Ray Hardebeck of Covington said individuals should give $1,000 if they want "access or have special needs that need to be discussed with the Governor and Lt. Governor" at a Sept. 23 fund-raiser in his home.
Mongiardo's chief opponent in the 2010 Democratic primary, Attorney General Jack Conway, said the solicitation is inappropriate.

"When official sponsors of fund-raising events expressly trade contributions for having special needs addressed by the governor and lieutenant governor, it opens an entire range of questions about the nature of this fund-raiser," said Conway spokesman Mark Riddle.

Ky. US Senate candidates spar over fundraiser

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A small businessman was caught in the middle of a sparring match Wednesday between two Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate.

Ray Hardebeck, president of Permakil Pest Control Inc. in Covington, angered Attorney General Jack Conway's Senate campaign by sending an e-mail to friends touting a fundraiser for his chief rival, Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo.

In the e-mail, Hardebeck said a separate reception will be held for people who contribute $1,000 "and would like to have access or have special needs that need to be discussed with the governor and lt. governor."

The fundraiser, which Gov. Steve Beshear plans to attend, is scheduled for Sept. 23 at Hardebeck's home.

Mongiardo fundraiser offers access to Governor … for a price

The Jack Conway campaign says the Dan Mongiardo campaign has "reached a new height of hypocrisy and raised potential legal and ethics questions" because the host of a Mongiardo fundraiser is offering big donors special access to Governor Steve Beshear and Lt. Gov. Mongiardo.

The Associated Press' Roger Alford got response from the governor's office and both campaigns.
Conway's campaign had e-mailed both a news release, and the original e-mail from the Covington, KY backer.
