Rand Paul is my guest Monday, September 28th on Issues & Answers: The Mountain Edition. The Bowling Green ophthalmologist is seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.
This Republican Primary could get interesting and the national media is giving it some attention. Secretary of State Trey Grayson enjoys the backing of the Republican establishment and has an early lead in fundraising and the polls.
Paul is launching a massive grassroots effort based on his candidacy as a “government outsider.” Paul’s campaign manager, David Adams, told our sister station WBKO, “We're encouraged by the outpouring of support and think it's based on a national support for returning to Constitutional principles, opposing bailouts and eliminating debts and deficits.”
Paul’s campaign has raised more than one million dollars. Earlier this week Paul raised nearly $200,000 in a “money bomb” fundraiser. The Internet based fundraiser was timed to coincide with Grayson’s fundraiser in Washington, D.C. Grayson’s event was hosted by more than two dozen GOP Senators at the National Republican Senatorial Committee headquarters.
Paul’s father used the web-based fundraising strategy during his 2008 Presidential campaign. Ron Paul raised more than $6 million in one day from an Internet fundraiser.
Paul and Grayson will also face Western Kentucky businessman Bill Johnson in the May Primary.
Incumbent Republican Senator Jim Bunning is not seeking re-election.
