The controversy continues today over Governor Beshear’s decision to call the Capitol Christmas tree a holiday tree.
Today, Governor Beshear issued this statement:
“We've been doing that since I became Governor. There are those folks who like to inject politics in to Christmas and I'm not one of them.”
“For Jane and me, it will be a Christmas tree because we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ during the holiday season. For other people of other faiths it may mean something different. But I think the most important thing is that we want all Kentuckians regardless of what their faith may be and what their religion may be to come together during this holiday season and renew their commitment to each other and renew their commitment to those who are less fortunate in our society and in a way that’s what the season is all about out.”
“I think the last thing we should be doing is trying to turn the holiday season in to some political game. I’m just not going to do that and hopefully others will come together and enjoy it for what it really is.” -- Governor Steve Beshear
This is just the latest chapter in a continuing Christmas debate. Some retailers, including Wal Mart, have returned to greeting customers with “Merry Christmas” after coming under attack for directing employees to say “Happy Holidays”.
You may remember I shared this video with you last December in a blog entitled
