Fifth District Congressman Hal Rogers shares his thoughts on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s health care bill in this op-ed piece.

By, Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers

On Saturday the United States House of Representatives faced a critical vote on a bill that will transform the role of government in our everyday lives.  Speaker Nancy Pelosi forced a vote on her government-run health care plan that will raise taxes, increase our already enormous national debt and puts the government between you and your doctor.  If that’s not enough to vote against something, this nearly 2,000 page monstrosity completely rewrites nearly 1/6th of our nation’s economy.  Not only does this bill actually raise health care costs and drastically cut senior’s benefits, it is the largest intrusion into our citizen’s private lives that I have ever seen. Below I have listed the reasons why I voted against this atrocity:

·       Forced to Purchase Insurance or Go to Jail: Whether you want to or not, this bill mandates that all citizens purchase health insurance that complies with stringent, new federal standards.  If you are unwilling, or can’t afford it, no matter.  The government will either forcibly enroll you in a government plan, garish your wages or send you to jail.

·       Taxes Small Businesses and Kills Jobs: In addition to new mandates, this bill increases taxes on small businesses by as much as 8%, and, as a result, jobs will be lost.  In these challenging economic times our struggling businesses cannot afford yet another tax.  Under Speaker Pelosi’s regime, however, our small business owners will be forced to decide whether to pay the tax or pay their employees.

·       The Wheelchair Tax: This bill will put a 2.5% tax on medical supplies.  Everything from your wheelchair to oxygen supplies to IV’s will be hit with a new government mandated tax.

·       Forces Doctors Out of Our Region: This bill will drive our doctors out of the state because of drastic increases in government regulations and mandates that will put them out of business.  Here in southern and eastern Kentucky we often struggle with rural health care and the lack of providers; however, this bill will make it even harder for doctors to practice in regions of the country like ours.

·       Cuts Senior’s Benefits: The bill makes devastating cuts to the Medicare program.  Over $500 billion in cuts will be made on the backs of our seniors so that Speaker Pelosi can pay for this horrendous bill.  Even worse, for the nearly 12,500 seniors in our region who rely on Medicare Advantage, the program virtually disappears in this bill.

·       Rewards Lawyers, Hurts Doctors: This bill awards trial lawyers and makes sure that they can get their take, making it nearly impossible to reform junk lawsuits against our doctors.  It even precludes states from enacting meaningful tort reform.

·       Gives Illegal Immigrants Free Health Care: This bill opens the floodgates of taxpayer money for illegal immigrants to abuse the system and obtain free government health insurance- paid for by you and I.

I will not support a bill that puts the government between you and your doctor.  I stand with the people of my district who want real reform, not the government dictating to them what health insurance they can or cannot buy. That is why I support the House Republican’s alternative health care bill.  This bill will lower health care costs and improve access without a massive government intervention.  It will preserve our right to choose our own doctor, protect Medicare and Medicaid, empower small businesses to get better insurance rates, limit junk lawsuits, reject a government takeover of our health care system, and would not bankrupt our nation.  Simple and less costly initiatives such as these will lower insurance premiums by at lest 10%, and provide health insurance to millions more Americans.
