This week I’m dedicating this space to your memories of 9-11.

We start with Missy Bianchi from Harlan.

Ten years ago, I had a son in 2nd grade and two young daughters, ages one and three, playing at home.  The TV was on and they had asked to watch a movie. When I went into the den to put a movie on for them, I saw live footage of one of the towers in New York with smoke billowing from the top section.  As I stood staring at the television, trying to find out what had happened, a second plane flew into the camera view and crashed into the second tower.  It was as if I were watching a horror show on TV. 

These images only began to get worse as video footage zoomed in on the people who were trapped in the floors above the area that had been struck by the plane.  These poor souls were screaming for help, while no help could be found.  Some even jumped out the windows while the cameras caught their descent.  Eventually, both buildings collapsed and the loss of life was staggering!  What a sad, horrifying day in history that was. 

Standing there in my den, as if my feet were glued to the floor, unable to tear my eyes away from the scene I was watching, I found myself wishing it were a horror movie.  As breaking news revealed that another plane had been hijacked and brought crashing down by passengers who bravely fought the terrorists, we learned that the Pentagon had been hit, also. 

Until that day, I had never given thought to the America I live in being anything other than a place of security for me; a place untouchable by terrorists; a place where I could raise my children and worship my God without fear.  All of that changed that day and although I continue to live a relatively normal life, these memories and thoughts are always in the back of my mind, reminding me that my beloved America, and her citizens, is as vulnerable as any other country and that this country, the United States of America, needs to get back on it's knees and pray for God to have mercy on us!
