Sunday’s Extras: Always

There are so many times I just sit down and ask the Lord, “WHY?” This weekend is no different. As journalists, we often meet people in their darkest hours. What are we supposed to say? How do we comfort the hurting?

There are so many times I just sit down and ask the Lord, “WHY?”  This weekend is no different.

As journalists, we often meet people in their darkest hours.  A parent loses a child, a husband dies in an accident, a little girl loses her mother … there’s sickness, floods, fires, crime … and the list goes on and on.  Bad things happen to good people.

What are we supposed to say?  How do we comfort the hurting?

The answer is inside each one of us.  It’s nothing that we can do ourselves. It is through the mercy and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ that the pain can turn to joy.

I don’t have all the answers.  In fact, I’m learning daily.  But I know that one day all of our questions will be answered.  I know that one day we will see the big picture; the pieces of the puzzle will all fit together.  Until then, we must have faith; we must put our trust in the Lord.

I thought a lot about this today as I listened to Building 429’s song Always.  The song was written about a mother questioning God about the death of her son.   The song doesn’t answer the why, but this line provides the hope.

What was I supposed to say
But I believe always always
Our Savior never fails
Even when all hope is gone
God knows our pain and His promise remains
He will be with you always

This video explains the message behind the song.

Here are the words for my hearing impaired friends.

Building 429 - Always

I was standing in the pour raining
One dark November night
Fighting off the bitter cold
When she caught my eye
Her face was torn and her eyes were filled
And then to my surprise
She pulled out a photograph
And my heart just stopped inside
She said He would have been three today
I miss his smile, I miss his face
What was I supposed to say

But I believe always always
Our Savior never fails
Even when all hope is gone
God knows our pain and His promise remains
He will be with you always

He was living in a broken world dreaming of a home
His heart was barely keeping pace
When I found him all alone
Remembering the way he felt
When his daddy said goodbye
Fighting just to keep the tears
And the anger locked inside
He's barely holding on to faith
But deliverance is on its way

'Cuz I believe always always
Our Savior never fails
Even when all hope is gone
God knows our pain and His promise remains
He will be with you always

Friend I don't know where you are
And I don't know where you've been
Maybe you're fighting for your life
Or just about to throw the towel in
But if you're crying out for mercy
If there's no hope left at all
If you've given everything you've got
And you're still about to fall
Well hold on, hold on, hold on

Cuz I believe always always
Our Savior never fails
Even when all faith is gone
God knows our pain and His promise remains
Always, Always
He will be with you always
He will be with you always
He will be with you

It’s ok to question God.  He wants us to be honest.  He wants us to share our true feelings.

You find that honesty throughout the Bible.  Look at this prayer of desperation in Psalms.

Psalm 61:1-2

Hear my cry, O God;
listen to my prayer.

From the ends of the earth I call to you,
I call as my heart grows faint;
lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

And then there is this promise from our heavenly Father.

Psalm 91:14-16

The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.

When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.

I will reward them with a long life
and give them my salvation.”
