GOP weekly address: Dems have priorities mixed up on oil spill response

One Republican Senator says Democrats have it backwards when it comes to the government’s response to the Gulf oil spill.

(AP) One Republican Senator says Democrats have it backwards when it comes to the government’s response to the Gulf oil spill.

Louisiana Senator David Vitter said Congress should be focusing on capping the well first.  He says many people in the region are frustrated that Democrats, who run Congress, have been holding hearings while the uncapped well continues to sully Gulf Coast waters.

"The time for committee hearings is for after the well has been capped, not before," Vitter said in the weekly Republican radio and Internet address.

Vitter said the focus should be on stopping the oil flow and protecting the coastline. He said coastal communities also are in desperate need of more containment booms, the barriers designed to stop oil from reaching the coast.

He accused Democrats of playing politics with the disaster.

"Some in Washington have tried to seize on this real human tragedy in the Gulf to advocate for a radical new energy agenda.  That only cheapens the loss of those who have lost loved ones and brushes aside the ongoing, unsolved problem to spring forward with an emotionally-charged political agenda.”

Vitter also promoted a bill that would raise the limit on a company's liability for an oil spill and direct work on technologies that can be used to cap similar oil leaks deep underwater.
