(AP) - President Barack Obama says Senate Republicans are playing politics with America's recovery.
In his weekly radio and Internet address, President Obama strikes a deeply partisan tone, saying the GOP leadership has chosen to "filibuster our recovery and obstruct our progress." He accuses Republicans of blocking votes that would extend benefits to the unemployed and increase lending to small businesses.
The President says those measures would breath life into the economic recovery.
Lawmakers have been battling for weeks over extending unemployment benefits. The last extension ran out at the end of May, leaving about 2.5 million people without benefits.
With the death of Sen. Robert Byrd, Senate Democrats didn't have the 60 votes they need to overcome a GOP filibuster. The Senate plans to take up the measure again on Tuesday.
I was out of the office last week. In case you missed it, here is the President’s weekly address from July 10th.
The President was talking about new regulations to make it easier for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder to receive government benefits.
