With a March 4 deadline looming, House Republicans and President Barack Obama
are locked in a bitter budget battle.
Congress has failed to pass a budget for the full year so lawmakers are scrambling to fund the government for the remainder of 2011 through a stopgap continuing resolution.
Republicans, pointing to looming federal deficits, want to slash 100 billion dollars from this year’s budget. The cuts would impact everything from education to the E-P-A.
The Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Hal Rogers, introduced what he calls “the largest single discretionary spending reduction in the history of Congress.”
“America has reached a fiscal crisis. We are now borrowing 40 cents for every dollar we spend. We have not choice but to rein in out of control spending, and get our nation’s fiscal house in order.”

Meanwhile, President Obama vows to veto the plan the many Democrats say goes too far.
If Congress can’t pass a spending plan, the federal government runs out of money and shuts down.
The government isn't going to shut down," Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, the Senate Republican Whip, said on Fox News Tuesday night. "Nobody is talking about shutting the government down."
Still, there’s no sign either party is willing to back down.
President Barack Obama met today with Senate Democratic leaders to strategize about taking on Republicans over the spending cuts.
